Women Soldiers of the Vietcong

In part to gain popularity, the communist government of North Vietnam focused significantly on increasing gender equality and providing opportunities for women. They created new laws to reduce sexual violence and child marriage and worked to create jobs and other public roles for women. When the war against South Vietnam began, women were major participants in the Vietcong’s wartime strategy, including combat. An estimated two hundred thousand highly skilled and trained women served in the North Vietnamese and Vietcong armies. They spied on American and South Vietnamese troops, operated underground communications networks, set traps, smuggled food and weapons, and even commanded soldiers. The efforts of these women contributed significantly to the Vietcong’s eventual victory.
